ALUMNI AWARD WINNERS

Kevin Poirier
Joseph W. Martin, Jr. Distinguished Alumni Award
2007

From his early days as a North High student whose four-year service to his school and class reads like a mini-bio of Joseph W. Martin himself, to his current role as Director of Development for Sturdy Memorial Hospital, Kevin Poirier has distinguished himself by his professional, personal and civic achievements in the realm of service.

Following graduation, the Class of 1959 Class President, student council officer, newspaper co-editor, and football star began a 17-year career at L.G. Balfour during which he began several service endeavors. From 1961 to 1964 Kevin served our country as a member of the United States Naval Reserve. In 1969 Kevin began a stint on the North Attleboro School Committee that lasted until 1976 and included two terms as chairman.

However, it was in 1977 that Representative Poirier began serving in the role for which he is best known, North Attleboro’s representative to the House of Representatives. Kevin became a high-profile fixture at the State House for over two decades, retiring in 1998 as Assistant Minority Leader and ranking member of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee. Among his many honors and accomplishments as a member of the state legislature are his 1996 Distinguished Service Award from the Massachusetts Legislators Association, his Legislator of the Year Award in 1990 from the Massachusetts State Police, and his Bristol County Man of the Year Award in 1997 from the Ancient Order of Hibernians.

Today, Kevin’s commitment to doing good work and helping others continues. He is currently the Director of Development for Sturdy Memorial Hospital, a position he has held since leaving the Legislature nearly 10 years ago. He also serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Greater Attleboro Chamber of Commerce, and was named “Person of the Year” in 2004 by the North Attleboro/Plainville Chamber of Commerce.

Kevin’s highest calling has been his 43 years serving as husband to current State Representative Betty Poirier, father of Sean, Ryan, and Brendan, all NAHS graduates, and the proud grandfather of Aya, Skyler and Casey.
