Donna Newbury
Excellence in Education Award
2025

Donna Newbury's ('67) journey, from her early days to her impactful career as a beloved educator at North Attleboro High School, is a testament to her dedication to teaching and her deep-rooted connection to her community.

Born on March 31, 1949, Donna grew up immersed in the close-knit fabric of North Attleboro. She completed her education at St. Mary's Elementary School, North Attleboro High School, and Framingham State College (now Framingham State University), where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education.

Donna's life is enriched by her family. She and her husband, Jim Newbury, together have four grown children and are the proud grandparents of eight grandchildren. Donna’s personal interests include gardening, baking, and sewing, along with past hobbies such as golf and boating.

Donna's fondest memories of North Attleboro High School (NAHS) revolve around the enriching experiences she had as a student. She cherishes the bonds formed through participation in Student Council, Glee Club, and as a member of the majorettes and drill team, leading the band in parades and onto the football field. The school rallies, dances, variety shows, and fundraisers are integral parts of her high school memories.

The most rewarding aspect of Donna's career was inspiring many of her former students to pursue teaching, influenced by their experiences in the Child Development Program she taught at NAHS. This program allowed high school students to work directly with young children in a nursery school setting, fostering a love for education that many carried into their future careers.

Teaching at NAHS was particularly meaningful for Donna, as it often connected her with the parents of her students from her youth. This continuity of relationships deepened her sense of belonging and pride in her work. Her favorite high school teachers, such as Elizabeth Ingram and Eleanor Sawyer, left a lasting impression on her and influenced her decision to pursue teaching.

Donna vividly remembers the pride she felt during each year's Nursery School graduation, witnessing the growth and development of both her high school students and their young charges. This program became a hallmark of her teaching career, embodying her passion for education and community.

Her mentors, including Elizabeth Ingram, played crucial roles in her professional journey. Donna took over the Child Development Program at NAHS after Mrs. Ingram's retirement, continuing to inspire future educators.

Donna's career exceeded her expectations, beginning at Franklin High School and eventually leading her back to NAHS, where she felt deeply connected to her roots. She urges graduating seniors to listen to the advice of those who care about them, encouraging them to pursue careers that align with their strengths and passions.

Donna's legacy at North Attleboro High School remains vibrant, reflecting her commitment to nurturing future generations through education and community engagement.
